I used to think the meaning of Aotearoa was ‘land of the long white cloud‘ with the emphasis on land, and visualised it (as though from distance at sea), as a continuous coastline with its rising land mass disappearing into cloud. But recently, upon studying a little deeper, it appeared that there was a different meaning altogether.
It became quite obvious that amongst researchers, linguists or historians that there was no doubt as to there being a very genuine origin to the Aotearoa name; and then it became very apparent that in the phrase, ‘land of the long white cloud’, that it was the cloud that was the object of importance, rather than the land.
You will notice that white may not necessarily be the only rendition, but that there are other suggestions of clear or bright, or even that it could be visible by its own light at night is possible. And then long and tall, as though high above the ground?
This next extract I have only found today [29 Sept. 2012]. It is written by J. O. Wilson and found in An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand 1966. ‘…The most popular and authoritative meaning usually given is “long white cloud”, and there are two stories current to illustrate this. It seems the voyagers to New Zealand were guided during the day by a long white cloud and at night by a long bright cloud. The more usual one tells how, when Kupe was nearing land after his long voyage, the first sign of land was the peculiar cloud hanging over it. …’
Note that it is the cloud that is the main subject matter. And after that quote I could not help but look up the Book of all books; I searched for paragraphs that included the words cloud, day, and night, and there came up a whole page full of results, not just one, but many with wording such as:
‘And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:’ and,
‘He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.’ (There are more ‘Cloud extracts’ in a future post)
At stages throughout history, the dimension of Eternity is made visible to the natural eye, and in 1963, at the most significant Supernatural event in nearly 2000 years, this dimension in the form of a Cloud was photographed. The dimension of course, has to be here now, and the idea is that it is also the same as what appeared at the time of Kupe.
This makes more sense if we have some understanding of the seven dimensions that are present, which in turn releases us from various misunderstandings that have caused many of the racial and other side-issues in the land. It also allows for a realisation that this Eternal dimension, the true Christ of many missionaries, was the main force opposing the more earthly aspects of human nature and Colonialism, (including religious and political); and that if it were not for the fact that that Dimension was already represented here in New Zealand, all earlier inhabitants would have been eliminated. ….next > Dimensions
